| Mastodon freaking rules. Children of Bodom and In Flames are good too. | | |
| So my younger brother has finally got me checking out the Rush catalog. He's so obsessed with that band it's ridiculous. He bought Sally and I tickets to go with him and see Rush for our wedding present, and I was absolutely stunned by the musicianship that those three guys exhert. That being said, most of their recorded legacy does not do them justice. Most of the rhythm guitar parts are so drenched in synthisizer that you can't hear them. Not so live. Those new to Rush should check out Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, and Moving Pictures. After that, check out Signals, Grace Under Pressure, and Test For Echo. For those who still can't get over Geddy Lee's vocal style, check out any of their instrumental tracks. This being said, I will make a statement. Feel free to comment. Alex Lifeson is the most underrated guitarist in rock, bar none. No, really. | | |
| Metalheads, listen up. If you have not heard Leviathan by Mastodon you simply have not heard the best metal record in years. How did this one pass me by? Ferocious, speedy and sludgy down-tuned riffs, insane drumming (a Neal Peart protoge to be sure...) and monstrous vocals. What could be better? How about the fact that the songwriting is of the progressive school and recalls ...And Justice For All era Metallica and Rush. Simply stunning. For those who don't prefer the hard and heavy, Iron & Wine's new EP with Calexico is phenominal. They are Sam Beam's songs sung by him and performed musically by Calexico, giving the end result a southwestern flair that really works. Funeral by The Arcade Fire has been getting some time in my CD player also. Very bizarre, but musically sound. The new Stavesacre is out now. It's called How To Live With A Curse and it's better than their self-titled album by far. The production is improved, and the songwriting is a notch higher. That's it for now. Feel free to post your own music reviews to give me a heads up on what's good. | | |
| So now I have a xanga site all to myself. I can muse about random music trivia without having to include the wife and child. This will be an outlet for my overflowing brain when I just have to let somebody know about that new album. I'll most likely write reviews and such. So here it is. For starters, the new Underoath album Define the Great Line is absolutely amazing. I got a promo copy because I'm reviewing it for my magazine. It blows their last album out of the water completely. So whiny emo boys beware. This is a real solid metalcore album. Intense to say the least. I've also gotten into Isis for whatever reason. Panopticon has been in my CD player almost nonstop lately. I've also been listening to Bob Dylan's catalog and I've been getting into Neil Young. That's it for now. | | |
